Going beyond the limitations of current technologies and keeping the world connected?

The University of Alberta Master of Science in Internetworking – MINT – is focused on Internetworking leadership training.

At MINT, the leaders of today are building the networks of tomorrow.

MINT – A Graduate Degree Program at the University of Alberta

Internetworking is the key to connecting networks of various sizes and complexity. It binds the world's many disparate networks together – a task that is increasingly complex and challenging. The goal of the innovative MINT program at the UofA – located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada – is to educate students on current Internetworking fundamentals and provide the management and analytical skills required to develop evolving Internetworking infrastructures and lead project teams. Students are exposed to both theoretical and practical aspects of Internetworking, taught by experts in education and research. You will also become familiar with the latest technologies and equipment through real-world applications and hands-on experience on over $2 million of new high-speed telecommunications equipment in the MINT lab.

A Graduate Education that Will Take You Places You Want to Go

The Master of Science in Internetworking program is a fully-accredited, course-based graduate degree program jointly offered by the Department of Computing Science in the Faculty of Science, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta.

Admission requirements include a four-year undergraduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related area. Significant industry experience may also be considered as a basis for admission.

The University of Alberta, located in the heart of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, offers an innovative two-year accredited graduate degree program that focuses on professional Internetworking leadership.

Internetworking graduate students enrolled in this Master's degree program can expect expert instruction, incomparable lab experimentation and learning opportunities in the $2 million MINT networking lab, and significant IT career and advancement opportunities.

There are several reasons to select the UofA MINT Master's degree program:

Internetworking Leadership Training: MINT teaches both theoretical (academic) and practical (industry) aspects of Internetworking to ensure skills acquired are valuable immediately upon graduation. Qualified instructors ensure that graduates have well-rounded theoretical knowledge, then are presented with current and real industry problems to be solved in the classroom or the lab. Graduates not only have the best instructors, they also have exclusive hands-on access to a state-of-the-art lab facility.

Technology Access: MINT uses the latest hardware and software, and gives students the inside edge on innovative and emerging technologies. Graduates will be able to make decisions based on first-hand experience, ensuring that the investment best meets business objectives. Additionally, the program will require students to design new software or hardware to solve problems or improve performance of existing networks or devices. Therefore graduates will have acquired a high level of understanding of current and future technologies.

Career Advancement: MINT graduates will have skills and expertise that are unmatched in the IT industry. Professionals with these qualifications are nearly impossible to find, and are in high demand all around the world. The increasing complexity of networks and the pace of technological development make it necessary to have a specialist in charge. You can become that specialist armed with advanced Internetworking theories taught in the program. Imagine finding solutions to problems that were previously unsolvable.

Industry Involvement: The MINT program was created to meet industry need. Cisco Systems Inc. and TELUS Inc. donated equipment and support to the program in response to a need for graduates to have experience solving industry problems on the latest equipment. An important feature of this network lab is that it provides opportunities for experimentation outside of a production environment – there is no risk of crashing an entire corporate network. The program links academics and industry to cooperatively resolve problems, and provide graduates with the broadest exposure to the world beyond the classroom. This combination of theoretical and practical knowledge is unparalleled in any classroom.

Intensive Sessions: For the working professional, MINT offers its courses in intensive sessions on weekends. This allows individuals to earn a Master's degree and advance their careers while maintaining full-time employment. A Master of Science in Internetworking accredited degree can also be obtained in full-time study.

A Graduate Degree Program for Professionals with a Full-Time Employment Commitment

To best serve our students, the Master of Science in Internetworking degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is primarily directed toward working professionals. Classes are scheduled in intensive weekend formats in order for weekday employment to be sustained. While most MINT students attend our graduate degree program on a part-time basis, full-time study to accommodate student loans or visas is a possibility. Contact us for more information.

Overview of the MINT Master's Degree Program

Year One:

The MINT Master's degree program begins with the basics of communication and works up to advanced management and analysis techniques. The curriculum consists of six core courses in the first year, including a special lab and a capstone project. Your graduate education will be gained from experts in all practical and theoretical aspects of Internetworking, and reinforced by exercises in the lab.

Students enrol in MINT's core courses as a cohort, which provides an opportunity to progress together while meeting peers, future co-workers and sources of specialized information. Within this structure, graduates have access to a network of experts in the field of Internetworking.

Year Two:

In the second year, MINT students select three electives and complete the capstone project course. The electives allow students to choose topics of greatest interest or that are most relevant to your education or employment. Experienced professionals, who have first-hand industry knowledge, teach our elective courses. The capstone project course involves addressing a real-world problem that is experienced in the industry using your newfound knowledge.

A MINT Graduate Degree from the University of Alberta Will Open Doors

Upon completion of the MINT curriculum, graduates will be armed with the most current technology training and experience within the Internetworking industry. You will be among the most highly-trained IT professionals and at the top of the networking hierarchy.

The campus is the backdrop for certificate, diploma, degree and graduate certificate programs, as well as continuing education classes offered by Humber’s Business School, the School of Creative & Performing Arts, Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Media Studies and Information Technology, and the School of Social and Community Services. Our faculties have great experience and are committed to sharing it with you.

 Humber Orangeville Campus

1-877-675-3111, Alder Street Recreation Complex, 275 Alder Street, Orangeville, ON L9W 5A9

HIGHLIGHTS

In 2004 the Town of Orangeville approached Humber with the concept of establishing a partnership to build a new campus to service the community and those surrounding Dufferin County. In October, 2005 a partnership was formulized where the Town of Orangeville donated a 28 acre building site on Veterans’ Way – County Road # 16  in the northwest section of the community.

Humber has committed to the development of a full-service regional campus to be built over the next 10 to 12 years.Three phases are planned for the campus design including a student residence, as well as an Arboretum. Construction on phase one is planned to be completed by 2009.

Academic and general programming research was conducted throughout the first half of 2006 to assist in the development of a specific ‘academic plan’ for the new college.

An Orangeville Campus Community Relations Office was opened in January 2006 to facilitate academic research and ‘general’ community awareness of the new college campus.

Housed in the Town of Orangeville's $18 million Alder Street Recreation Complex, Humber's Orangeville Campus is temporarily housed on the 2nd floor of this wonderful facility. This campus offers four fully functional and wireless classrooms, a Student Commons/Computer Lab as well as an incredible on-site fitness centre, including swimming pool, two hockey rinks, library, and food court.

 Postsecondary Diploma and Certificate Programs

Students can choose from over 100 diploma and certificate programs at Humber. A postsecondary diploma or certificate is designed to give students practical hands-on experience, as well as theoretical knowledge in their chosen field.

An advanced diploma will take six semesters (three years) to complete and will generally include a work placement. A diploma will take at least four semesters (two years) to complete and will usually include a work placement.

Certificate programs are generally shorter, less than four semesters (less than two years), and place a greater focus on applied learning. Technical certificates are generally three semesters in length, and focus on technical hands-on learning skills using an individualized learning approach.

The following full-time postsecondary program listing has been designed to help you identify a general field of study and the associated programs offered within that discipline.
