Why  Maastricht Hotel Management School

Maastricht Hotel Management School was founded in 1950 by local hotel companies, and gradually evolved into one of Europe’s top-ranking hotel schools. Over the past half century, Maastricht Hotel Management School has obtained a solid reputation thanks to its broad network of contacts with international companies and hotel chains – many of which employ the school’s former students. Maastricht Hotel Management School provides first-class education for a career in the Hotel and Tourism sector – the fastest growing industry in the world. The school’s Bachelor and Master Programs are aimed at students at the start of their career, as well as at hotel and tourism professionals preparing for moving onward to a position in higher management. All programs share the same interdisciplinary approach, based upon the “Problem Based Learning”-method, which has been designed for training those skills that have become characteristic for Maastricht graduates: independence, creativity and flexibility.

The hotel school is located in Bethlehem Castle, an idyllic medieval castle on a quiet campus just north of Maastricht. This historical environment – the oldest parts of the castle go as far back as to 1153 – contrasts with up-to-date training facilities. The school of course has an excellent restaurant, student housing and even an on-campus 9-hole golf course.

Maastricht graduates can be found in senior management positions in the greater hotels and tourism related companies all over the world. Besides, the hospitality background of former hotel school students has become more and more valued in other areas of economic life and many of them have made a career also in management consultancies, and in marketing, sales, or HR positions in companies which are not directly linked to tourism.

Maastricht Hotel Management School is part of the Zuyd University of Professional Education, which besides the Hotel School has prestigious schools in different professional fields in the larger cities of southern Limburg, such as the Theatre Academy, the Fine Art Academy and the Music Academy (Maastricht), the Business School (Sittard) or the School for Communication and Multimedia Design (Heerlen).

Maastricht in Netherlands

Maastricht is a small and safe city with around 120.000 inhabitants. With its two universities, the city has a large and international student population for its size. Maastricht is an attractive tourist destination because of its historical city center, its high class shopping and restaurant facilities and its vicinity to two international borders. The city owes its international reputation to the Treaty of Maastricht (1991). In 2004, the city was awarded the title of “Best City in the Netherlands”.

What is PBL-Problem Based Learning

Maastricht Hotel Management School applies various teaching methods. Problem Based Learning is one of our cornerstones. In this method, specific for the Maastricht universities, teaching is not subject-oriented but interdisciplinary: students are required to solve problems that cover more than one discipline (e.g., law and economics). As a result of the PBL system, Maastricht graduates are known for their initiative and independent thinking, as well as their ability to link theory with practice.

Internships

The Maastricht Hotel Management School considers the internship to be an important part of the program. There are two internships, one in the third study year and one in the final study year. The aim of the operational internship is to introduce you to the branch at basic crafts and at the same time get an overall picture of hotel and catering. The ratio between operational internships abroad and those in the Netherlands is approximately 93% : 7%. Most internships abroad vary from countries in Asia, Europe, South Africa or North America.  In the fourth year of your studies you go on a management internship. This can be done in various types of organizations such as a hotel, consultancy, congress or facility organization, working in the tourism branch or cruise industry. Here you are placed in situations which require management skills.

History of the UNA University of the Netherlands Antilles (UNA) was formed by a national decree dated 12 January 1979 (O.B. 1979 no. 12). A number of developments that occurred in rapid succession after 1970 were very important for this formation.

The Law College of the Netherlands Antilles, where students were trained to take the LL B Antillean Law exam, was established by a national decree dated October 6, 1970 (O.B. 1970 no. 1130)

A degree program Business Administration was started at this College of Law in 1973 after which a name change to College of the Netherlands Antilles followed in 1974 (O.B. 1974 no. 118). This transformation meant that the possibility was opened to follow a full degree program in law in the Netherlands Antilles that could lead to a Master’s exam and also a degree program in Business Administration, leading led to a Bachelor’s

The Department of Business Administration was changed into the Department of Business Administration and Public Administration in 1977, after which students could also obtain a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration

Finally, with the foundation of the UNA in 1979, the Antillean College of Technology, which had been established in 1972, was transformed into the Faculty of Engineering, offering students an education to the level of bachelor

Currently the UNA has four faculties

a

The Faculty of Arts, which offers a Second-Degree Teacher Training program Papiamento, Dutch and English

b

The Faculty of Law, preparing students for the Master’s exam in Antillean law

c

The School of Business, which offers the degree programs Business Administration and Accounting and prepares students for Bachelor's and Master's exams

d

The Faculty of Engineering, which offers the degree programs Architecture and Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Information Engineering and Electrical Systems

The UNA’s quality control process

Structural monitoring and improving the quality of the courses in higher education is a recent worldwide phenomenon. The United States and England lead the way in this development. One of the results hereof is a worldwide improvement of the quality of education.
The UNA has decided to follow these developments closely and to internalize the results thereof in a responsible manner. With this in mind the UNA has recently started its own internal quality control process, with the aspiration to introduce and implement a system of internal quality control in all its programs. The UNA aims at having all programs achieve an internationally recognized hallmark of quality or accreditation by 2010.

The quality requirements set by the Dutch–Flemish accreditation organization (NVAO) form the basis for the quality control system within the UNA, as the programs will be accredited by the NVAO. The programs take about 3.5 years to complete the quality control or accreditation process. This process will require extreme effort from all involved, at management, faculty, program, and departmental levels.

The accreditation process

Consisting of self-evaluation, improvement path, visitation and final accreditation, was preceded in the UNA at the end of 2003 by a Zero Measurement Study in order to take stock early of the current quality of the programs. The intention is to implement the most import points of improvements in the short term. Furthermore, self-evaluation has taken place in the course of 2005, based on self-reflection and a critical analysis.

A quality control newsletter Kz-Nieuws (in Dutch) appears regularly, with information about quality control and accreditation. It deals with various current topics that not only concern the quality control process in the University of the Netherlands Antilles but also explains a specific quality theme.
