Education System in USA & Canada American higher education starts with undergraduate courses. You can earn either a two-year associate's degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree. Students often earn an associate's degree first, and then study two more years to gain a bachelor’s (or baccalaureate) degree. Usually, a bachelor’s degree will be awarded by a university, whereas an associate's degree may be earned either at a community college or university. Undergraduate degrees (and some master’s degrees) are awarded after a student completes a pre-determined number of courses. A student is awarded credits for the courses he or she takes, and the degree is complete when the student completes the required number of credits. This means that although most students complete bachelor’s degrees in four years, some spend longer if they take part-time classes or take time off from school. Graduate degrees, often known as master’s degrees, require at least two years at a university. These are often termed “advanced professional degrees,” as they tend to be aimed at specific professions. Graduate degrees are career-advancing degrees in subjects such as medicine, law, and management. For example, a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) is the standard business graduate degree. Doctorates (PhDs) usually take four years to complete, and are research-based. The U.S. education system has a reputation for being the world leader in graduate education. Conversely, it’s also the most accessible and least selective for undergraduate education and certain graduate programs, such as education, business, and management. This gives the opportunity of higher education to people who would not have access to it in other countries. Advantage USA American colleges are known worldwide for the quality of their facilities, resources, and faculty. Accreditation systems ensure that institutions continue to maintain these standards. The American education system is unrivaled worldwide in its variety institutions, academic and social environments, entry requirements, degree programs, and subjects. Value: As an investment in your future, a U.S. degree offers excellent value for the money. A wide range of tuition fees and living costs, plus some financial help from colleges, have made study in the United States affordable for thousands of students before you. One of the most distinctive features of U.S. universities and colleges is the choice of courses within a single institution. More importantly, students can move between one institution and another with relative ease. It is common to complete the first two years of a degree at one institution and then transfer to another. Selecting an Educational Institute Selection of a good Educational Institute college is a large investment in time, money, and effort. The following criteria would help you determine the right Institution: 1. Curricula, policies and administrative practices 2. Housing facilities 3. Courses offered 4. Choice of Programs that interest you 5. Admission requirements. Do you meet them? 6. Quality of education Vs cost of tuition. Make compromises considering long term. 7. Services and leisure activities. 8. Job placement rates for recently graduated students 9. Accreditation, licensing, and student loan default rate 10. Graduation statistics 11. Percentage of students who complete programs 12. Percentage of students who transfer to other schools 13. Security of the campus & the location. Review the school's campus security report 14. Consult us before making the decision. Don’t decide merely because you have a friend/relation in the area or in the institution 15. Check with the local Better Business Bureau offices to see if there are complaints Institution 16. Financial aid availability 17. Refund policies before enrolling in classes 18. Counseling procedures for the school's financial aid office, location, and hours 19. Procedures and deadlines for submitting applications to financial aid programs 20. How the school selects financial aid recipients 21. How will the school determine your financial need 22. How and when you'll receive your aid 23. Are there work-study programs available? What kinds? 24. Accommodation & part time employment opportunities 25. Whether the Institution offered paid internship as part of the course or program Expenses & Tuition Fee Tuition is the cost of teaching & fees on the other hand, are charged for library use, student activities, insurance, healthcare, internet etc. International students are required to pay both tuition and fees. Although the range of tuition and fees may vary greatly from Institution to Institution , there is no correlation between the level of tuition and fees and the quality of an institution. Tuition and fees are generally higher for private universities than for State universities. Community, technical, and vocational colleges charge the lowest fees of all. State universities charge out-of-state residents higher tuition than state residents. Generally international students studying at state Institution pay a higher rate throughout their study program because they do not qualify for residents' rates. It must be noted that not all universities charging the lowest tuition and fees also have the lowest living costs; you should examine both factors to get a more accurate estimate of your annual expenses. How to submit a successful application? Apply early. Do not wait for A/L or IELTS or TOFFEL results to come? Consult us early & get free advice to select a Institution. Not only will this enable you to compete for a larger number of available seats, but early applicants clearly demonstrate enthusiasm and intent to succeed. Develop individual dialog with the admissions faculty. Use the essay and/or the cover letter of your resume to communicate your determination to be accepted into the program. Don’t mince your words – be confident and bold. Request letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your dedication & enthusiasm. Letters from former professors, employers, or other sources who can testify to your academic performance and work ethic are also appropriate. Use your essay as an opportunity to help the admissions committee really get to know who you are, and why you want to earn your degree at the particular university. Address any lapse in your academic performance record in your program essay. Proactively answer questions that the admissions committee is likely to have about your previous academic performance. Prepare for the GRE/GMAT. Scholarships & Financial Aid Undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships are forms of aid that help students pay for their education. Unlike student loans, scholarships and fellowships do not have to be repaid. Hundreds of thousands of scholarships and fellowships from several thousand sponsors are awarded each year. Generally, scholarships and fellowships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, who are members of underrepresented groups, who live in certain areas of the country or who demonstrate financial need. It is also recommended that graduate and transfer students apply at least 60 days before the start of classes. SEMESTER RECOMMENDED APPLICATION DATES Semester Recommended Application Date Starting Date Fall JUNE AUGUST Spring NOVEMBER JANUARY Summer APRIL JUNE Is UNA an accredited university?
Is UNA a well ranked university in the US? UNA is one of the first 100 universities among over 4,000 institutions in the USA and the oldest in the State of Alabama. . Is there any mature entry option available at UNA or in US education system? Yes, undergraduate students who are over 25 years are not required to take the ACT or SAT tests for entry to the University. Consideration may be given to lifetime work experiences. Students may take special tests to allow them to receive credit for knowledge gained during their life. What is the duration of the programs The duration of bachelor’s program at UNA can be completed in 4 academic years. The duration of masters program varies from one, one and a half and 2 academic years depending upon the course of study and the previous degree earned by the student. Is work experience required for the MBA or any other program at UNA? Having prior work experience is an advantage but it is not mandatory. What other Concentration apart for Accounting is available in an MBA? Information Systems concentration, international business concentration, management concentration, marketing concentration & new venture management concentration. What does pre-professional program means? A pre-professional program is designed to provide the student with the first two years of a four or five year baccalaureate program in a professional field (e.g., accounting, engineering, architecture) and/or the foundation courses for a professional field requiring post undergraduate study (e.g., law, medicine, dentistry, teaching). Why is the duration of the MBA program 1 year, for students who have a BCom/ BBA/ BBM degree and the duration of the MBA a year and a half for students from Bachelor’s degree in other disciplines? Students who hold BCom./BBA/BBM have completed all of the prerequisite or foundation courses for the MBA (e.g., fundamentals of accounting, microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial management, introduction to management, and introduction to marketing) may begin taking MBA courses immediately. However, students graduating from other disciplines (e.g., engineering) typically have not had the foundation or prerequisite courses for the MBA program, must take these prerequisite courses before that begin taking MBA classes. Similarly, students who graduated in BCom./BBA/BBM wanted to pursue an advanced degree in engineering would be required to take prerequisite or foundation courses in engineering before taking advanced engineering courses. Typically prerequisite or foundation courses take 2 semesters to complete (unless one or more of these courses have been taken with satisfactory academic performance). UNA always tries to reduce the number of prerequisite or foundation courses to the minimum consistent with solid academic standards and accreditation requirements. In case the student has to undergo the prerequisite subjects/foundation course prior to his MBA, are these subjects taught simultaneously with the MBA or separately before the course? Prerequisite or pre-MBA courses tend to precede MBA courses. However, it is possible in some cases to take both types of courses simultaneously. Frequently asked questions about Housing and Meal plans
Also, all residence halls on campus have key card security access and other safety and security measures in place. Further, all University provided residence halls are centrally air condition or heated (depending upon the season) and are ported for voice, video, telephone, and data. Office of Housing and Residence Life does not provide any assistance to find off campus places. If an international student stays outside the campus how much will be the expense per month for him for accommodation and meals? Off campus housing tends to be more expensive than living on campus in University sponsored housing. Furthermore, it is almost always necessary for students who reside off campus to have an automobile because apartments are at a distance from campus that is too far to walk. The cost of an apartment off campus rages from $250 per month plus utilities to $700 per month plus utilities (depending upon the number of rooms, quality of the rooms, and other factors). The cost of purchasing prepared food is an individual matter typically ranging from $20 to $50 per day. If a student prepares his or her meals, it is often less expensive than purchasing meals from restaurants and there are many supermarkets from which to purchase an array of food. Will I be allowed to cook my own meals? If so will I be refunded the payment made for meals? Yes, students may prepare their own meals. Students must decide at the beginning of each semester if they are going to purchase a meal plan which runs for the semester. Is the housing available to the students even when the University has long duration Holidays? Yes, there are option for living in the residence halls during holidays and other academic recesses. Frequently asked questions about Internship Can I do an internship as a part of the program? Will I be paid for the same? Students may participate in an internship as part of the MBA program; however, this will require one additional semester of study. Some internships are paid experiences and others are not. The importance is the quality of the experience and how such an experience adds value to the learning process and the possibility of converting this experience into a paying job upon graduation. Can I do an internship AFTER the program? How long will that be? Will I be paid? No, internships are available only while students are enrolled and before they graduate. However, it is possible to work for one year following graduation from the program subsequent to US immigration policies and rules. Is there any paid internship for any particular course for international students and for which courses? Paid internships are possible and are often associated with junior and senior courses in programs offered through the College of Business and in graduate programs offered through the College of Business. Internships are available through the other colleges at UNA but tend to be more limited. Frequently asked questions about Employment

As a leader in career education among American universities, Johnson & Wales University has placed its School of Arts & Sciences in this key role of providing general education to enable its students to achieve career success and personal fulfillment. To accomplish these objectives, students take approximately 33 percent of all their credits in Arts & Sciences. In addition, the School of Arts & Sciences offers Across-the-Curriculum programs in Writing, Critical Thinking, Ethics and Community Service Learning. Writing Across the Curriculum is a University-wide program that encourages students to use writing as a way of learning and communicating knowledge, thereby enabling students to acquire skills empowering them to pursue their professional goals. The Writing Across the Curriculum program at Johnson & Wales was developed to integrate the “writing to learn” concept across all majors. All students are required to complete at least one writing-intensive (WI) course within their major field of study. Additionally, students may take WI courses as they are offered in general studies and elective areas. Students at J&W may also elect 13.5 quarter credit hour concentrations in Applied Mathematics, Biological Science, Career Writing, Environmental Science, Global Perspectives, History, Leadership Studies, Literature, Physical Science, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and World Languages. They are also encouraged to attend the Cultural Events Series featuring appearances by renowned artists, performers, authors and musicians. Housed in the School of Arts & Sciences, the Feinstein Community Service Center coordinates the Providence Campus’ academic and co-curricular community initiatives. The Feinstein Center provides Community Service Learning (CSL) opportunities for all students, in fulfillment of the University graduation requirement; offers support for student-initiated service effort and volunteerism; implements co-curricular programming for staff and students in conjunction with the Office of Student Activities, the Center for Leadership Studies and the Office of Campus Diversity; encourages volunteer and in-kind assistance for community-based organizations; and develops civic initiatives to address hunger and homelessness issues. As part of the University’s strategic plan, the center also helps oversee and implement the University wide “Community Leadership Initiative,” designed to develop students into community leaders and to model community leadership as an institution. The School of Arts & Sciences offers honors courses in the freshman year as well as in a few upper-level classes. In addition, an honors option is offered in many other courses. The John Hazen White School of Arts & Sciences offers a Summer Abroad Program which is currently situated in England. Students can earn 13.5 credits of general education courses. The course offerings may vary each summer, including history, sociology, literature, science and art. The experience includes three weeks in England with excursions to historical cities, such as Bath, Cambridge port and London. The academic component of the summer program is challenging, and students will benefit from innovative teaching strategies including team teaching and collaborative learning. In recognition of the importance of offering leadership initiatives at Johnson & Wales University, the Center for Leadership Studies champions the idea of making Johnson & Wales a place where leadership opportunities abound “Across the Campus.” The center serves as a resource for students, faculty and staff to develop their leadership through experiential opportunities in community service, student life activities, academic courses on leadership theory, and training workshops on leadership topics. The center reaches out to the community by offering corporate leadership training and by fostering partnerships with community organizations and schools. At Johnson & Wales, leadership is part of our institutional culture, and our students are prepared to become the business leaders of the future. Medical Studies in the United States
American education is a dream of many students and there has been an ever increasing demand of medical studies in the United States. Formerly foreign undergraduate students could enter medical school in the US after completing the MCAT examination. This route is very difficult. Firstly, the medical school in US costs about $100,000 at the minimum for international students; Secondly there are only a limited number of seats a medical school can fill with out of state students. Therefore, this is generally not the preferred route. The alternative pathways after MBBS MBBS graduates who are more academically inclined and more interested in teaching and research than clinical medicine, they should take the GRE exam and then enter into either an MS or a PhD program in the US. MS program are generally geared more towards industry than academia and thus, though more expensive, may be preferable to some students. Ph.D program offer more financial aid and thus they may be the preferred option for those students interested in basic science research. Program exist in virtually all of the basic medical sciences but the ones preferred are health information systems, biotechnology and neurosciences. MBBS graduates with an administrative bent of mind can pursue courses in MPH or hospital administration. These program, however, usually do not offer any significant financial aid. MBA courses geared towards physicians and healthcare professionals are also available. One has to pass the GMAT exam to gain admission to MBA courses except University of North Alabama , which are very expensive and offer little in the way of financial aid. Whatever career path the student choose, remember that hard work and dedication are always rewarded in the US and provide personal, professional and financial fulfillment. We are recruiting for the Spring and Fall 2008 at the moment and will be happy to answer any queries you may have.
PHARMACEUTICAL & PHARMACOLOGY Studies in USA
There is an increased demand of admissions to Pharmacy programs in American Universities. The student can seek admissions in the following programs at Masters level that requires a TOEFL (minimum score 80) and GRE (minimum score 1200), apart from educational credential evaluation by WES (www.wes.org). All applications must be made eight months to eleven months in advance for these highly competitive programs. 1. Pharmaceutics 2. Analytical Chemistry 3. Pharmaceutical Chemistry 4. Pharmacy Administration 5. Industrial Pharmacy 6. Pharmacognosy 7. Health Professions 8. Biological Chemistry 9. Hospital Pharmacy 10. Pharmaceutical Sciences 11. Pharmacology 12. Toxicology 13. Medical / Medicinal Chemistry Pharm. D. Programs : The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program in the United States requires at least 2-years of specific pre-professional (undergraduate - Bachelor's) coursework followed by 4-academic years (or 3-calendar years) of professional study. The B.S. of pharmacy degree is no longer offered in the U.S. The pharmacy admission process is highly competitive for all applicants. Some U.S. pharmacy institutions do not consider international (non-U.S.) applicants for admission. Some U.S. pharmacy institutions give admission preference to applicants who live in the same state as the school. For these schools, international and out-of-state (non-resident) applicants may compete for a limited number of positions or may be ineligible for admission, depending on institutional and state policies. Private pharmacy institutions generally offer non-U.S. citizens a greater number of positions within the program as compared to state-supported, public institutions. The classes required for admission vary by pharmacy school. To obtain admission requirement information, visit the web site for each Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program. If the U.S. institution considers non-U.S. citizens for admission, the applicant must meet the same minimum entry requirements as American students, including course prerequisites and standardized tests. Applicants who completed pharmacy study outside the U.S. will be required to submit original foreign transcripts or a course-by-course foreign transcript evaluation report, depending on school policy. Some pharmacy schools do not accept pharmacy courses taken at a foreign institution. If an applicant's primary language is not English, the pharmacy schools require the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). GRE is also required. Educational Credential Evaluation is required from WES (www.wes.org).
