Undergraduate Qualifications
Technically an undergraduate is anyone studying towards a bachelor degree who has not yet graduated (received a degree).
In practice the University of Bolton considers all students who are studying towards a bachelor degree, a foundation degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Certificate (HNC) as an undergraduate.
The main qualification obtained at a university in the UK is known as a degree or bachelor degree and someone studying for a degree at a university is called an undergraduate.
A bachelor degree normally involves 3-4 years of full-time study or 4-7 years part-time study. The University of Bolton currently offers 6 types of bachelor degree:
BA - Bachelor of Arts
BSc - Bachelor of Science
LLB - Bachelor of Laws
BDes - Bachelor of Design
BEng - Bachelor of Engineering
BEd - Bachelor of Education
Bachelor degrees can be either pass degrees or honours degrees. Honours degrees are generally of a higher academic standard and are identified by the term (Hons) after the degree abbreviation.
The grades, if you pass, are known as a first class (highest, often shortened to "a first"), a second class ("a second"; usually divided into an upper second - 2:1 or "two-one" - and a lower second - 2:2 or "two-two"), and a third class ("a third").
Most students study for a Single Honours bachelor degree in a single subject. However, it is often possible to combine two subjects of interest - these are called Combined Honours degrees.
Foundation degrees
Foundation degrees are modern higher education qualifications, designed and delivered in partnership with employers to equip people with the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for - now and in the future. You can study for a foundation degree whilst you are in work, or you can choose to study full-time. Some foundation degrees are also available by distance learning. In general, a foundation degree will take two years to complete if studied full-time or three years if studied on a part-time basis. On successful completion, foundation degree graduates can revisit their career options and may choose to enter employment, progress to further professional qualifications or on to a bachelor degree. The University of Bolton offers a number of 'top up' options especially designed for foundation degree graduates wishing to gain a bachelor degree. The University of Bolton currently offers two types of foundation degree:
FdA - Foundation degree in
Arts
FdSc - Foundation degree in Science
Higher National Certificates and Diplomas (HNCs and HNDs)
Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas, or HNCs and HNDs as they are better known, are vocational qualifications that are available in a wide range of subjects. They are designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current or future employment or for progression to a bachelor degree.
HNCs usually take one year if studied full-time and two years if studied part-time. HNDs normally take two years when studied full-time and up to five years when studied part-time. It is quite common for those who have achieved an HNC to progress to an HND and then to add to their qualification by studying towards a bachelor degree or professional qualifications. Equally, many students who complete an HND will progress to similar further study.
Postgraduate Qualifications
A postgraduate (sometimes simply known as a graduate) student is anyone who has successfully completed a bachelor degree, and who is now studying towards a higher qualification at university. There are a number of different types of postgraduate qualifications awarded by the University of Bolton. These fall broadly into two categories:
Taught masters degrees (MA, MSc, MBA)
Postgraduate certificates (PgCert)
Postgraduate degrees by research
Taught masters degrees, postgraduate diplomas and postgraduate certificates
Taught postgraduate programmes usually result in a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Business Administration (MBA), but there are some for which the final award is a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) or Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert). These qualifications are also available as interim awards to students registered for masters programmes who do not, for whatever reason, complete the masters degree.
Masters students will be expected to display mastery of a complex and specialised area of knowledge and skills; demonstrate expertise in highly specialised and advanced technical, professional and/or research skills; conduct research, or advanced technical or professional activity; design and apply appropriate research methodologies; communicate results of research to peers; accept accountability in related decision making, including use of supervision.
These outcomes are delivered and assessed through a series of taught modules encompassing relevant subject matter and research methods, and a sustained period of independent research and study under supervision, leading to the production of a substantial dissertation or project. The normal length of a masters degree is 12 months of full-time study or 2-3 academic years part-time, with each stage (PgCert, PgDip, Masters) taking approximately one third of the total period .
For details of the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) please see our Teacher Training and Teaching Qualifications webpage.
A graduate diploma is considered to be a postgraduate qualification as it is only available to people who already have a bachelor degree. However, the contents of the course are undergraduate in nature. Graduate diplomas are popular in professional subjects such as Law, Accountancy, and Psychology and act as conversion courses for people who wish to change careers and gain professional accreditation. The University of Bolton currently offers a graduate diploma in Psychology.
Postgraduate degrees by research
Studying for a postgraduate degree by research leads to the award of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). For both degrees candidates will need to develop a research proposal, under supervision, which evaluates previous research, defines the research question and thesis, and describes the research methods to be employed and the advances in understanding expected to result from the research.
The research MPhil takes 18-24 months full-time and 36-48 months part-time. Whilst the outcomes are the same as for taught masters degrees, the means of achieving them is through a critical investigation and evaluation of an approved topic and demonstration of an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field. Candidates must present and defend a thesis by oral examination.
The PhD is the highest academic award of the university. The PhD requires critical investigation and evaluation of an approved topic, resulting in an independent and original contribution to knowledge and an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field. It is assessed through presentation and oral defence of a thesis. Candidates will need to make a significant and original contribution to a specialised field of inquiry; demonstrate command of methodological issues; communicate results of research to peers and engage in critical dialogue; accept accountability in related decision making, including use of supervision. A PhD will take 3 years of full-time study .The Centre for Materials Research and Innovation at the University of Bolton also offers a PhD by publication for industrially based materials scientists and engineers. This is a work-based qualification which requires students to undertake research/developmental activities in their place of work over a period of three years.
