 New Students - Visa Info

If you are an international student interested in entering the U.S. to study full-time, you will need a student visa. You are considered an international student if you:

were not born in the U.S. and

are not a citizen OR

do not have a “green card” granting you permanent residency status in the U.S.

There are two major categories of nonimmigrant student visas: J1 and F1.

J1 student visas are for those who want to participate in an exchange visitor program or internship program in the U.S. This visa is intended for students needing practical training that is not available in their home country.

An F1 student visa is needed if you are interested in studying in the U.S. at an accredited college or university.

To obtain the necessary visa, you must submit a DS-156 Form, as well as an I-20 (for an F1) or a DS-2019 (for a J1), to the United States embassy or consulate in your country of citizenship or permanent residency.

For visa application forms, go to the U.S. Department of State. You can also check current visa wait times for your country online.

You will also need to present a valid passport, evidence of financial support and any other documents required by the embassy or consulate. Check with your respective U.S. Embassy before you apply, since requirements might differ from embassy to embassy.

In addition to completed and signed application forms, you must prepare the following documents when applying for a visa:

A passport valid for at least six months after your proposed date of entry to the U.S.

One passport size photograph (37x37mm), showing full face, without head covering, against a light background.

A receipt for the visa processing fee. (Keep a copy for your records.)

All three pages of I-20 (for F1) or DS-2019 (for J1) form, signed by the applicant and by a school official in the appropriate places.

Financial evidence (such as bank statement, scholarship letter or graduate assistantship appointment letter) that clearly shows that you or your financial sponsors have sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living expenses.

Proof of binding ties to a residence in your home country that you have no intention of abandoning.

F2 and J2 visas are for the spouses and/or children of F1 or J1 applicants. F1 applicants with dependents must furnish the relevant marriage and/or birth certificates as proof of the relationship. It is preferable that families apply for the required visas at the same time; however, if the spouse and children must apply separately, both parties must bring with them a copy of the F1 visa holder's passport and visa, along with all other required documents.

Student Visas

Along with a letter of admission, immigration officials require a completed
I-20 form from students seeking to obtain an F-1 student visa for study in the US.  Any I-20 issued with our letter of admission clearly lists the sources of funding which will cover the direct costs and incidental expenses of attending Florida Southern College for the academic year.  Most often, the list includes several sources:  the student’s own contribution or that expected from the family, various sponsoring agencies from which the student may have secured assistance (such as churches, corporations or service organizations which might agree to provide limited scholarship aid), and any funding which FSC will provide in the way of scholarships or grants.  In order to list those funds and issue an I-20, we need to have on hand a bank letter (on original bank letterhead) showing available funding and/or a completed sponsorship form.

Our Financial Aid Office will notify students about any scholarship aid for which they qualify, and all such funds will be listed on the I-20 in the appropriate space.  The I-20 is issued once the student has been accepted for admissions and has indicated a commitment to attend by paying the required deposit of US $500. An I-20 form will not be issued until the $500 is paid to Florida Southern College.

page all from a desktop computer. The Corporate Communication program, leading to the B.S.
degree, prepares students for positions in government, private industry, and the not-for-profit
sector as specialists in the visual and verbal presentation of information. The required courses in this interdisciplinary program focus on how communication is used in business to promote

Management

The program's inherent flexibility promotes the skills to manage in a variety of business and industry positions. The carefully planned courses provide the foundation for making intelligent business decisions. Entrepreneurial education is an essential component of the Management Program. Emphasis is placed on: creating and revising strategic plans; processes leading to planned outcomes; budgets and controls; personnel issues and ethics in business. These skills are as applicable to small business as they are to medium and large business enterprises.

Pre-Law

The Pre-Law major at Webber International University gives the student the best of both approaches to the preparation for law school. The business core courses prepare the student for the commercial and corporate aspects of the practice of law and the courses that compose the pre-law major represent the sociological and political aspects that lead to the development of the current legal environment. Students selecting this major should strongly consider elective courses that reinforce analytical and critical thinking and problem solving. The Webber International University curriculum is especially appropriate for students pursuing a career in law because of the concentration of writing and oral communications skills cultivated in the general education courses and the business core courses. Students may also select a minor in another area of business such as accounting or finance. These areas comprise a significant portion of the preparation for law school and the practice of law as a profession.

Security Management

The Security Management major is designed for those students who aspire to have a leadership role – in either the public or private sector – in the realms of security. Consequently, the degree is designed to provide students with the fundamentals they need to be managers in general coupled with specific coursework in crime, justice, investigation, and security. As a cohesive course of study providing a broad base of management knowledge and a concentration of industry specific knowledge, the program of study is intended to provide students, whether in private or governmental entities, with the skills they need to manage security related departments and functions

Sport Management

The sport industry is truly international. Demand for the leaders needed to maintain its success is growing rapidly. The Sport Management program is designed to provide such leaders. Building on a solid business core, the student then explores the unique aspects of such areas as sports promotion, sports information and media, and facilities and event management.

General Business Studies

The Bachelor of Science in General Business Studies is a program that recognizes the ever-changing needs in the world today. The program offers flexibility for students who have career goals that require a business background but do not require a specific major field. The program is structured to permit the transfer of up to 39 non-business related credits for students who have earned credit in another area but have recognized the need for a business foundation in their chosen field of employment. It also provides flexibility for the student to select a large number of electives within the business field to tailor the educational program to the student’s life goals. The General Business Studies course work is largely managerial and entrepreneurial in scope. The program is ideal for students who want to operate a small business in a technical field or who are reentering college after having earned college credit in another field. Students are encouraged to consider a minor to accompany the General Business Studies degree

Freshman Admissions

International students who are entering Webber International as freshmen must submit documentation in the original language (if other than English) and an English translation.  Proof of high school graduation or the equivalent in the country the student attended secondary school is required.  Exit examinations for students from countries where they are required must be submitted.

In some countries, the student is issued only one original copy of the transcript or examination results.  In these cases, students may submit a certified copy of the original that bears the seal of a public official or the Director (Headmaster) of the school for admission consideration.  When the student arrives at Webber International, the original documents will be photocopied and certified by a Notary Public.  The certified copies will be maintained in the student’s academic record and the originals will be returned to the student.

TOEFL or completion of English as a Second Language program may be used to satisfy the English proficiency requirements.  Some schools abroad are teaching course work in English.  A student, who has studied in a school where all courses are instructed in the English language, may request waiver of the TOEFL requirement.

REQUIREMENTS

· $75 Non-refundable Application Fee

· TOEFL (or approved substitute)

International students who are seeking admission as graduate students will need to submit official transcripts in the original language (if other than English) and an English translation.

International colleges and universities must be recognized by the Ministry of Education, Department of Education or other official accrediting body in the country in which the student studied.  Coursework completed at technical schools may be eligible for graduate admission.  However, coursework completed at vocational schools does not qualify the student for graduate studies.

Students applying for graduate admission based upon work completed in foreign universities must have their transcripts evaluated by a professional evaluation service.  The Webber International University faculty will make the final decision regarding transfer credit into the university degree programs.  Webber International University recommends several services that can be contacted through the links provided.

Employment

When you apply for an F-1 visa, you must prove that you have full financial support. The law assumes that you will not be employed in the U.S. and therefore will not accept employment that could be filled by a U.S. worker or student. There are some exceptions to this policy provided that full-time enrollment during the year is maintained and the appropriate permission is obtained, but you should always check with a DSO before accepting employment, especially if it is off campus. Some types of acceptable employment are given below:

On-Campus Employment: If you are maintaining your student status, you may take a part-time job (20 hours or less per week) on campus as long as it does not interfere with maintaining full-time enrollment. If you do not have a U.S. social security card, you will need to request one. Contact the Student Development Office for assistance. F-1 students do not need work permission from the INS to work on campus or to receive a graduate assistantship, but the Student Development Office must certify work eligibility.

Off-Campus Employment (for Economic Necessity): International students may qualify for off-campus economic necessity employment only with the express authorization of INS. Authorization is very difficult to obtain and will be granted only under the following conditions:

· Unforeseen changes in financial conditions occur after beginning the program of study, which are beyond the student’s control and make employment necessary for the student's support.

· Acceptance of employment will not interfere with the student’s ability to maintain a full course of study.

· Employment will not exceed 20 hours per week while school is in session.

In order to apply for such permission, the student must be in good academic standing and carrying the required full course of study. F-1 students who have been in the U.S. for less than one academic year are prohibited from working off campus. See a DSO for further details.

Practical Training: The information on Practical Training is complicated and subject to change at any time. Please check with a DSO for any updated regulations and additional information. In order to qualify for practical training the following criteria must be met:
· A student must have been in F-1 status for at least nine months before any practical training may be authorized.

· A student must be registered full-time in the preceding semesters and must be IN-STATUS with INS.

· The practical training employment is authorized only in the student's field of major study.

Curricular Practical Training: If you register for a paid internship off campus, there are, as with any off-campus employment, INS procedures to follow. Contact the Student Development Office for assistance. Unpaid internships do not require INS paperwork.

Master Programs

Trine University is proud to add the Master of Engineering degree to the offerings of the Allen School of Engineering and Technology. This program offers an array of possibilities for young engineers and returning graduates alike: new degrees in five years, a better salary, or a promotion.

Master of Engineering
The rapid pace of technological advancement has resulted in a demand for engineers with advanced training. Engineers with the skills necessary to lead the design of a complex system are highly sought by industry. Regional manufacturers regularly comment that new engineers “lack the applied experience that allows them to take their knowledge from the classroom confidently into the workplace,” and that “more design skills will be required.”

Explore.

By emphasizing advanced design skills rather than research, the Master of Engineering program addresses the needs’ of industry leaders. The Master of Engineering is a design-based, engineering practice-oriented degree. This fits our mission of educating quality, work-ready engineers. Trine has built its reputation on the success of its graduates in engineering practice; the Master of Engineering degree is designed to further that success.

Experience.

A proposal to require one year of education beyond the bachelor’s degree for registration as a Professional Engineer is now being considered in many states. With its emphasis on design and practice, the Master of Engineering degree will give you an excellent base for professional registration.

Excel.

Master of Science with a major in Criminal Justice
is an accelerated degree program that provides education for both pre- and mid-career individuals serving their communities as law enforcement, corrections, court practitioners or with private agencies that deliver services in the justice arena.  The curriculum is designed to prepare these professionals to assume key leadership roles within the justice system or the private sector. This Master program is available at our Fort Wayne location.
